Inside the hot and heavy air of the cabin, Brannon collapsed on the floor pallet. He promptly sprawled out in a deep sleep.

Elizabeth’s quiet, yet firm voice brought him around. “Mr. Brannon,” she whispered, “Someone’s out there. Wake up!”

Brannon staggered to his feet, grabbing for his gun, hat, and boots, still on his feet. His body moved, but his mind fought to locate where he was and why this Indian girl poked him.

“Mr. Brannon, I heard someone outside,” she repeated.

“Stay away from the door. Get Everett’s pistol and keep in the corner with Littlefoot,” Brannon ordered. “I’m going to swing the door open. If Rutherford and his men are out there, they’ll probably start shooting right away.”

Brannon sat next to the door and prodded it open with his foot. He pulled back quickly. The silent, cold night air chilled him to the bone.

His pistol drawn, he crawled out the doorway onto the porch. He squinted, trying to spot anything moving in the night. Something or someone straight ahead of him, lay flat in the snow, as though sneaking up on the cabin. He pointed his gun, cocked it, and waited a moment before snarling, “Hands in the air, nice and slow.”
